About 'Dawn is Coming'
Like their family member the Crow, Magpies generate mixed reactions. In pre-Christian times they were see as bringers of good fortune; however a 19th century story that they were the hybrid offspring of the biblical raven and dove (and therefore the only bird not to be baptised) put paid to that. The Victorians hated them and hunted them to virtual extinction.
'Dawn is Coming' was created during the first lockdown of 2020 and shows a magpie waiting for the sun to rise again. Deep colours create a moody atmosphere, but there are glimmers of gold through the darkness and the image is finished with a shimmer of artist’s glitter on the moon and magpie’s feathers.
